NTK Safety & Glass Handling Guide
Glass is a durable and versatile material, but it must be handled with care to ensure safety and longevity. NTK Industries offers this guide for safety and handling. Please read below.
1. General Safety Precautions
-
Always wear protective equipment such as gloves, protective footwear and safety glasses when processing or handling any glass product.
-
Always handle glass with care, especially the edging of glass as it can be extremely sharp.
-
Keep glass products away from children.
-
Inspect glass for any damage, as it may shatter unexpectedly.
2. Transporting Glass
-
Always use both hands with a tight grip.
-
Identify the weight of the glass before transporting the glass.
-
Use two or more people to carry long or heavy glass.
-
Always carry glass vertically, as uneven stress on the glass can cause breakage.
-
Always restrain glass during transport to ensure it is secure and wont shift or move.
3. Storage Guidelines
-
Do not let glass get wet or leave in a humid area, especially with multiple glass stacked on top of each other. A dry environment is recommended.
-
When storing glass, ensure it is upright on a slight 5-6 degree angle, leaning against a smooth and stable support.
-
Glass should avoid contact with concrete or stone etc. Glass is likely to break if it encounters surfaces such as these.
-
Use protective padding (e.g. rubber or foam) under the glass and between sheets to avoid scratches and breakage.
-
Avoid storing glass in high-traffic areas.
4. Installation Safety
-
Ensure surfaces and frames are clean, level, and free of debris before installation.
-
Do not force glass into tight spaces, as this may cause stress fractures.
-
Use appropriate fixings and hardware designed specifically for glass.
-
For heavy or large installations, always seek professional assistance.
5. Cleaning & Maintenance
-
Avoid harsh chemical, scraping tools, or abrasive pads that can scratch the glass surface.
-
Clean glass using a microfiber cloth or sponge with a non-abrasive glass cleaner or water.
-
Avoid cleaning glass when it is extremely hot or in direct sunlight, as this may cause streaking on the glass surface or spontaneous breakage due to thermal stress.
-
Regularly inspect glass for damage
6. Avoiding Breakage
-
Avoid exposing glass to sudden temperature changes (e.g. hot water on cold glass).
-
Avoid impact from hard or sharp objects.
-
Avoid placing heavy items against glass surfaces.
Note: Toughened glass can spontaneously break with no cause or impact, this is a known fact and can be unavoidable.
7. What to Do If Glass Breaks
-
Keep a safe distance from broken glass.
-
Wear protective gloves when cleaning up.
-
Carefully collect large pieces first, then sweep up smaller fragments.
-
Dispose of broken glass in a suitable bin.
-
Never pick up broken glass with bare hands.
